introducing Croatia

Nicknamed the pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is perhaps the most prestigious of destinations to visit in Croatia. Dubrovnik is the perfect place for anyone who likes to combine sun and sea with culture and history- it has plenty of both. Dubrovnik is situated in the extreme south of Croatia, and as a result is blessed with a wonderful Mediterranean climate. Croatia boasts over a thousand islands along its rugged coast, from outdoors and water sports enthusiasts to food and drink enthusiasts, clubbers, and even nudists everyone can find an island to their taste. Dubrovnik is the perfect place to either begin or base a holiday exploring the possibilities.

As well as stunning views, beautiful weather and delicious food, Dubrovnik has had a rich and varied past. During the middle ages it was a maritime republic (known then as Ragusa) that was second in wealth and power only to Venice. As a result of this prosperity, Dubrovnik became a centre for the arts and enlightenment. It was a home to poets, artists, musicians, mathematicians and scientists, and was one of the major influences on the development of the Croatian language. It boasts many beautiful buildings of various styles- wonderful examples of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture are present throughout the city. The beauty of Dubrovnik was very nearly lost to all in the conflict of 1992-1995, during which time it endured heavy bombardment.

Fortunately the damage is all but repaired, and Dubrovnik is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, although here and there you can still see evidence of mortar and bullet damage. The city is the perfect destination for tourists- the entire old town is pedestrianised, which allows for safe and fun exploration of the warren-like roads and paths within the impressive walls of the city. One of the best times to visit is during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which takes place from July 10th to August 25th, featuring music, poetry and art.

Due to poor road links, and no rail line from the north, it is a good idea to fly in. Dubrovnik has its own International airport, and cheap flights are available from low-cost airlines like Monarch. As with any holiday, it is essential that holidaymakers get travel insurance. Arranging it online has never been easier or cheaper and AA Travel have some good deals, with benefits including emergency assistance available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, medical expenses up to £10,000,000 discounts for couples & families and special rates for single-parent families.
