Vela Luka with its 4500 inhabitants is one of the largest towns on Croatian islands. It is not as famous as Hvar, Rab, LoΕ‘inj or even the town of KorΔula itself, on the opposite side of the island of KorΔula, since the tourism has never been the main town's activity (fishing, agriculture and traditional shipbuilding). This is the reason why it comes closest to the slogan βMediteran as it once wasβ. In spite of this (or, better to say, because of this) there are numerous beautiful unspoiled beaches with amazingly clear water on the inner and outer sides of a deep bay where Vela Luka is situated. All the beaches are easily accessible by roads except, of course, those on the nearby islands of OΕ‘jak and Proizd which are connected by cheap taxi boats and are highly recommended by the owners (see photos). The beach on the island of Proizd was proclaimed, some years ago, as the best beach on the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. The hilly interior of the island is also very interesting with many old towns and villages surrounded by numerous vineyards, olive trees and pine forests. Although there are many possibilities for various adrenaline-sport activities and late night parties, this type of holidays is somewhat more convenient for those who prefer traditional, relaxing and peaceful holidays spent with their families and friends, good books food and wine.
